It simply had to happen: a show about the little deer where it all began. The most famous children’s film of all time paints an idyllic forest full of talking animals, friendship and romance. But beneath that lovely surface lies another story.

In the original book from 1923, nature is cruel and indifferent. Surviving means learning to rely on yourself. Bambie speelt Bambi sets these two worlds against each other and explores what remains when the romance disappears.

Iconic scenes are given a new, physical translation: the birth, slipping and sliding on the ice, the death of the mother, the hormonal discovery of love. The forest becomes a home invaded by the elements of nature, where human figures display animal urges. In Bambie speelt Bambi, three individuals search for a personal answer to the question of what our ‘natural’ destiny is. And which of life’s lessons are needed to grow up in this day and age.
