Inspired by and following on from Augustus: Oklahoma, The Legacy brings a critically acclaimed family drama to Dutch theaters. A tragicomic story about the dysfunctional Lafayette family, who struggle with hidden secrets, distorted memories and unfulfilled desires.

The story takes place on a family estate in the American South. Three adult children gather with their families in their deceased father's house. The contents must be divided and the house sold. While underlying tensions fester and old feuds flare up, the children make a disturbing discovery that will change their lives forever.

The language of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is vibrant and muscular. The characters are gruesome, violent and vulnerable at the same time. The family problems are tough and funny, but The Legacy is more than just a family chronicle. The Lafayette family symbolizes a Western world that struggles with the question to what extent children bear responsibility for the actions of their parents.

A world in which the youngest generation must find a way to live with what has been left to them. Because whoever ignores the past will inevitably be overtaken by it.
