De Surpriseshow tells the powerful story of a child growing up between uncertainty and hope. The play touches on the deep longing for change, the impact of waiting and the clash between fantasy and reality. A personal and universal story about the search for a future in an uncertain world.

In 1994, as a young girl, Nazanin fled Iran for the Netherlands and ended up in the asylum seekers’ centre (AZC) in Kollum. Her biggest dream? To take part in De Surpriseshow. Every day she practised her lip-syncing skills in front of the mirror, convinced that Henny Huisman would call. At the centre she became friends with Maya Bradarić, and she was spat at after the murder of Marianne Vaatstra. She waited for certainty, for papers and for an invitation.

Years later she is on stage herself, with an acting degree and a flourishing career on TV and in the theatre – and finally one step closer to Henny Huisman.

De Surpriseshow is a personal, raw, moving and hilarious solo show. About dreams that stayed wrapped up for years, full of childhood memories of blossoming friendships in the waiting rooms of a system that kept referring you on but never answered. About what endless waiting does to a child, and how theatre is sometimes the only place where the girl who saw everything is finally seen.
