Sometimes it feels as if a storm lives in Novi’s chest. Nobody knows why. One day she escapes to the attic, a place full of boxes, yellowed photos and the smell of long ago. There, two mysterious little figures appear and vanish into old photo albums. Novi jumps in after them.

In Kakek, Opa & Ik Novi travels through her family’s hidden stories. Through photo albums, letters and forgotten melodies, she dives into the past. What begins as a playful voyage of discovery grows into a magical journey through her family history and a colonial past shared by the Netherlands and Indonesia that still resonates today.

Along the way Novi discovers that the anger she feels may be older than she is. That emotions can travel from generation to generation. And that understanding sometimes begins with looking, listening and feeling.
