Matthäus Passion - Kempenkoor

The program includes a shortened performance of the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach. You will hear all the chorales, many choral works and some famous arias - an evening full of impressive music. The whole is performed by Kempenkoor in collaboration with baroque orchestra La Sorpresa (more than 130 musicians) led by conductor Cees Wouters. Two days later, these performers shine in the basilica of Oirschot, where the 20th performance of the St. Matthew Passion takes place. This tradition is widely praised as “the most beautiful in the south”.

Soprano Rosa Ligtermoet brings to life some of the most beloved arias, including the beloved Erbarme Dich. Tenor Gert-Jan Verbueken briefly tells us where we are in the story and sings some recitatives. The evening has a relaxed character: between the music you will occasionally receive an explanation about the instruments, the composition or the meaning of an aria. This way you can enjoy the progress of the work even more consciously, and it remains accessible to young and new visitors.
