Nederlands Blazers Ensemble
With Richard Strauss and Arnold Schönberg, the NBE turns its attention to love: romantic longing and the confrontation with harsh reality. The light, graceful Serenade and the more expansive Suite by a young Strauss are set against Schönberg’s intense Verklärte Nacht, a musical rendering of a nocturnal confession full of guilt, forgiveness and inner transformation.
For the first time, the NBE is performing an entire programme with wind instruments only. Strauss in his original scoring and Schönberg arranged for winds by Geert van Keulen means chamber music of the highest order. An exciting search for new colours and for what lies hidden behind the original orchestrations. Flemish writer Maud Vanhauwaert translates the story of Verklärte Nacht to the present day. With playful, astute observations and unexpected twists, she makes love and vulnerability tangible.
