Conny Janssen Danst
BEHIND THE WALL, Conny Janssen’s large-scale new dance show and latest choreography, raises topical questions about identity, belonging and loss. With live music by the boundary-pushing artist Roufaida, a gripping journey unfolds about what it means to be at home somewhere — and what happens when that home changes or disappears.
This new show builds on the universe of Conny Janssen’s earlier show HOME (2017/2021), which centred on the question of where, and with whom, we feel at home. HOME was set in a large, white, anonymous space and ended with an enigmatic image: after all the dancers have left the space, one dancer remains. She drifts lost through the space and eventually disappears through a high opening in the set. The audience is left behind, gazing at the empty white space.
In BEHIND THE WALL we see the dancers finding their way in a world where memories, loss and hope constantly intermingle. What happens to them? What do you take with you from the past when you have to start again? Where are you allowed to feel at home? And how do you stay connected to where you come from? The diverse and adventurous ensemble of Conny Janssen Danst brings this search to life with an intensity that both moves and confronts. With her distinctive choreographic signature — a powerful mix of raw energy and hushed poetry — Conny Janssen creates a universe in which personal stories and universal questions touch.
The live music of Dutch-Moroccan artist Roufaida is the beating heart of the show. Her layered sound, in which North African influences, alternative pop and poetic lyrics come together, deepens the themes and heightens the emotional power of the dance.
45 minutes before the start, Annette Embrechts, dance and theatre journalist for de Volkskrant, will give an introduction. You can reserve a place for this free of charge when booking.
