Literair Café
Stefan Hertmans (1951) made his breakthrough in the Netherlands in 2013 with his novel War and turpentine. However, Hertmans had been active as a writer for decades. He wrote a versatile and extensive oeuvre: poetry, novels, essays, theatre texts, short stories. In addition to his writing, Hertmans taught in the master's programme of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK, Ghent University of Applied Sciences).
His work is rich in images, layering and emotion, and has received numerous awards. In his last novel Dius (2024), he examines the friendship between a young artist and his teacher, and the thin line between admiration, love and jealousy. Hertmans writes with the sensitivity of a poet and the imagination of a painter. Hertmans searches for what it means to be human in a world full of beauty and loss. His prose breathes silence, attention and a deep love for the craft of writing.
