Dr Melanie During discovered the season in which the meteorite struck that brought 165 million years of dinosaurs to an end. With more than twelve years of excavation experience — from the Winterswijk quarry to the badlands of North Dakota — she knows how fieldwork works by now. And yet: on the second-to-last day of one such expedition, on her way back to the car, she tripped over a protruding bone, while a few metres further on a colleague went flat on his face over an even bigger one... Because fieldwork in practice looks a little different from how it does on TV.
