Hidde van Gestel (Tilburg, 2000) won every prize at the latest edition of the Groninger Studenten Cabaret Festival. With his intelligent, language-driven show, Hidde won over both the audience and the jury. And it leaves you wanting more.

Hidde is a cabaret performer, a graduate in Dutch language and literature, and a secondary-school Dutch teacher. He is known for his sharp eye for himself and the world around him. With wry, self-deprecating humour, Hidde reflects on the dividing line between who he is and who he thought he would become. He can be scathing, but his charming Brabant accent softens the blow. Before you know it, he’s said something sharp without you even noticing.

Fittingly, his first full-length show is titled ‘Cum laude’. Fast, ambitious and charming, Hidde shows how frustrating it is to live between expectation and reality. As a young teacher with a love of language and literature, he won’t settle for a bare pass; this evening has to be nothing short of excellent. Expect a barrage of sharp jokes from this promising newcomer with a double master’s degree (not that it matters, but still).

He is making the show together with director and creative producer Laurens Krispijn de Boer (who has worked with René van Meurs and Ruud Smulders, among others).
