Hidde van Gestel (Tilburg, 2000) won all prizes during the last edition of the Groningen Student Cabaret Festival. With his intelligent and linguistic performance, Hidde managed to captivate both the audience and the jury. And that leaves you wanting more.

Hidde is a comedian, Dutch scholar and Dutch teacher in secondary education. He is known for his sharp view of himself and the world around him. With humor that puts things into perspective, Hidde reflects on the dividing line between who he is and who he thought he would become. He can be vicious, but his charming Brabant drawl has a soothing effect. Before you know it, he has said something sharp, without you realizing it.

His first full-length performance is therefore entitled 'Cum laude'. Fast, ambitious and charming, Hidde shows how frustrating it is to live between expectation and reality. As a young teacher with a penchant for language and literature, he does not settle for a six; Expect a barrage of sharp jokes from this promising newcomer with a double master's degree (not that it matters, but still).

He created the performance together with director and creative producer Laurens Krispijn de Boer (a.o. René van Meurs and Ruud Smulders).

Hidde van Gestel is a name to remember and it is best to have been there from the very first minute…

The press about Hidde

  • GSCF jury report: “Hidde plays cleverly with the expectations of his audience and likes to mislead people or create a pleasant kind of discomfort.”

  • Theaterkrant: “Van Gestel is a good storyteller, who takes the time to sketch his situations and also uses his physique in a particularly pleasant and shameless way.”
