In Amor Matador the heroic matador fades into the background. The story is carried by Carmen and Maria, his lover and his mother. While the matador José sinks his teeth into revenge, they refuse to accept that fate must repeat itself. They long for a different story: one in which blood no longer flows to prove something, but keeps flowing in order to live.

Raw, poetic and unsettling
Silbersee and Het Muziek (formerly Asko|Schönberg) present a groundbreaking flamenco opera: raw, poetic and unsettling. Actress Ariane Schluter gives voice to Maria: clear, timeless and multilingual. Burkinabé multi-instrumentalist Kaito Winse moves between voice and body as Carmen. And the matador José rings out in the arias of Argentinian tenor Jonatan Alvarado.

A new world of sound
The music of American composer and drummer Brendan Faegre deconstructs Bizet’s Carmen and reassembles the material into a new world of sound, with acoustic guitar, electric harp and the menacing roar of a bull. Director Aïda Gabriëls lets music theatre, opera, dance and visual art flow together into a ritual in which the arena survives only as an echo.
