Amor Matador - Silbersee | Het Muziek

Muziek

In Amor Matador the arena symbolizes an ancient bastion in which masculinity is traditionally measured in violence and struggle. However, this Carmen is not about the heroic matador. The story is told by the women: Carmen, the lover, and Maria, the mother. They refuse to accept a tragedy that continues to scar generations. Their story is not about blood that flows, but about blood that keeps flowing.

Silbersee and Het Muziek do not present a classical adaptation, but an innovative flamenco opera: raw, poetic and disruptive. Actress Ariane Schluter gives voice to the resistance as Maria. Brandon Faegre performs Carmen, with music inspired by son jarocho, a style that mixes flamenco with other traditions. Matador José finds his voice in arias by Jonatan Alvarado.

Direction is in the hands of the Flemish Aïda Gabriels. In her work she explores the boundaries between classical and modern art forms. She creates transdisciplinary projects in which musical theater, opera, dance, performance and visual art touch each other and form something new.

The media about Amor Matador
“Language, rhythm, breath and sound collide with the question of what happens when someone refuses to fight? When softness claims the stage?” (Aïda Gabriels)
