You’re nineteen, you’ve just moved into student digs, you’ve just started a new course, and suddenly you’re scared. At first you hope it’s just a dip, but the fear stays. Afraid of mirrors, of eyes, of people in the street. Loud noises make you jump, and you wonder whether what you hear, think and see is still real.

At twenty-five you sit down and try to make sense of the past few years. Is it getting better, or will you be stuck in this endless fear forever? In BANG, Hanneke van der Paardt takes her life apart and then tries to put it back together again.

BANG is about those bizarre years when you’ve just left your parents’ home but haven’t yet arrived anywhere else. About how fear can grip you mercilessly in that phase, and about what on earth you’re supposed to do then.

With BANG, Hanneke van der Paardt won the BNG Theaterprijs 2025, THE award for up-and-coming theatre talent in the Netherlands.
