Sexodus - Theater Utrecht

Her body bears the scars of centuries of aesthetic oppression. What began as going along with it turns into resistance. In a rousing revenge fantasy, she takes the weapons of art, the entertainment industry and social media into her own hands. Using fashion, live video and music, she wages a final battle against a global system that thrives on female insecurity. In the hope that, once the rage has burnt itself out, she might catch a glimpse of what lies beyond.

SEXODUS offers an honest look inside the female mind and shows how a woman’s body is shaped, used and reclaimed.

SEXODUS is a physical rollercoaster in which Naomi Velissariou transforms into a storm of images of women, under the meticulous direction of Nicole Beutler. The uncompromising language of Bregje Hofstede and Naomi Velissariou is carried by the cunning sound design and tight visual language of Performancecollectief URLAND, which runs off with references from pop culture, history and art. All of this is visually underlined by the provocative costume design of artist Ülkühan Akgül. This teamwork results in a “one woman show” that is as multifaceted as woman herself.
