Freedom fighter, people's hero, idealist, traitor, dictator? Sukarno. No, Sukarno. The man who stands up against oppression, tries to give a voice to a deeply divided people, sacrifices his compatriots, sues the Netherlands, liberates Indonesia, turns the world upside down.

Some still prefer to see him as an insignificant footnote to a painful, repressed history.

In this new performance by Bo Tarenskeen (creator of, among others, Het Indisch Interieur, WITTGENSTEIN 2 and KISSINGER), we see him looking for what holds a people together. During his imprisonment, the Japanese occupation, the Bersiap, the colonial war – and during the last, tragic hours of his presidency.

Bo Tarenskeen and Esther Scheldwacht (known from De eeuw van mijn moeder and Zachtop lachen) play the young and the old Soekarno in a performance about the desire for unity, the danger of theatre and the vulnerability of democracy.
