Freedom fighter, people's hero, idealist, traitor, dictator? Sukarno. No, Sukarno. The man who stands up against oppression, tries to give a voice to a deeply divided people, sacrifices his compatriots, sues the Netherlands, liberates Indonesia, turns the world upside down.

Some still prefer to see him as an insignificant footnote to a painful, repressed history.

In this new performance by Bo Tarenskeen (creator of a.o.The Indian Interior, WITTGENSTEIN 2andKISSINGER) we see him looking for that which holds a people together. During his imprisonment, the Japanese occupation, the Bersiap, the colonial war – and during the last, tragic hours of his presidency.

Bo Tarenskeen and Esther Scheldwacht (known from a.o.My Mother's CenturyandSoft top laugh) the young and the old play Sukarno in a performance about the desire for unity, the danger of theatre and the vulnerability of democracy.
