Vandaag - Herman van Veen
Recently ran into someone at the market
who looked at me in surprise.
‘Are you still around?’
I felt like turning round to look.
We got talking.
The man had seen me in the sixties
at the municipal theatre.
He had emigrated once
but had come back to the Netherlands
so that in due course he could be buried in Utrecht.
I told him
that besides genetic good fortune,
the singing
is probably what has made sure
that I can still, heart and soul,
play some hundred and forty shows a year.
Of course there’s a creak here and there
and I don’t jump quite as high
as I did at seventy-eight.
So yes, sir,
I’m still here.
And if it’s up to me
I’ll be here
a good while yet.
