In 2026, John Coltrane would have turned 100 years old. At the invitation of Bozar, FES (Flat Earth Society) pays tribute to this visionary musician, whose influence has touched generations of artists - within and far beyond the boundaries of jazz.

The spirit of Coltrane finds its way into the idiosyncratic universe of FES through unexpected musical detours, winding paths and inexplicable encounters. His legacy is examined, dissected and edited – in a way that is playful, perceptive and fearless.

Coltrane was, above all, a seeker. A musical explorer who continually sought out new sound worlds and pushed boundaries. That constant desire to search, question and explore new horizons is also the beating heart of FES.

The Coltrane Mutations presents idiosyncratic arrangements and interpretations of some Coltrane classics alongside new compositions, all tried and tested by the “Trane virus”.

This concert is a celebration of Coltrane's music: intense, spiritual and boundless. But it is also a tribute to his free spirit – a spirit in permanent resonance.

“I never even thought about whether or not they understand what I'm doing. . . the emotional reaction is all that matters as long as there's some feeling of communication, it isn't necessary that it be understood.”
“Jazz is a word they use to sell our music, but to me that word does not exist.”
— John Coltrane
