Maarten Heijmans & Xander Vrienten
What would Maarten van Roozendaal have sounded like if he had been born in New Orleans? Or Boudewijn de Groot in Nashville? What if Shaffy had washed up in Memphis instead of Mokum? Or the other way around: if Townes van Zandt's family had never left the Zaan region? And just imagine the sound of Dr. John, but in Marken. Loss, longing and the little tragedies of life. Stories about ordinary people and their fate. We prefer a piano, they prefer a guitar. But always armed with striking sentences and a good dose of irony.
In Waiting for Death Maarten Heijmans and Xander Vrienten find out. Together with a strong band they play new songs and cabaret classics, somewhere between the Jordan and the Mississippi.
What to do in the waiting room of death? Life.
About Maarten & He was part of the ITA acting ensemble for a long time and made an impression with his role as Ramses Shaffy on TV. With his musicality and sense of text and theatre, he gives new life to the repertoire of our greatest songwriters.
Xander Vrienten developed as a bassist, songwriter and producer, who feels just as at home in rock 'n' roll as pop music. As long as there is a little soul in it. There, where blues, folk and jazz come together, they unexpectedly found a lot of affinity with Dutch cabaret song. That discovery gave rise to the idea for this program.
