Mystiek Lichaam

Theater en toneel

Forty years after the publication of Frans Kellendonk's controversial novel, director Koen Verheijden is staging the story again. In his characteristic, layered language, Kellendonk captured a year in the life of the broken Gijselhart family. A family that grows into a penetrating mirror of the polarized Dutch society at the end of the twentieth century. And forty years later, that image is still surprisingly recognizable.

About people who love each other, but cannot tolerate each other.

The Gijselhart family wants nothing more than to belong together, but the harder they try, the further they drift apart. Because while we watch this derailing family, the question inevitably arises: do we really think that we are doing better as a society than in Kellendonk's time? Verheijden opts for a grotesque, sometimes raw-comic performance style in which humor and discomfort coexist closely. Not to judge, but to make visible how people can lose each other. Especially when they try to hold each other.

45 minutes before the start, an introduction is given by Annette Embrechts, dance and theater journalist for de Volkskrant. You can reserve a spot for this free of charge during the ordering process.
