Bert Heerink & Martijn van der Zande
On Saturday 23 March 2019, Bert Heerink played with Jan Akkerman’s band ‘My Brainbox’ at the Podium in Hoogeveen. The support act was a self-assured young man, Martijn van der Zande, accompanying himself on guitar in a number of beautiful Dutch-language songs! Knowing that a rock band is about to let rip after you, that takes ‘guts’, to say the least. Martijn stuck in people’s minds and could count on growing interest from both his own audience and Bert Heerink.
Bert, himself known as the singer of the band Vandenberg (‘Burning Heart’ became a worldwide hit) and later successful with, among other things, ‘Juli July’, performances and tours with major orchestras, singing in Disney films (Tarzan and Brother Bear being the best known) and as a much sought-after guest singer on big projects including the Pink Floyd Project, saw in Martijn van der Zande the perfect man for an acoustic project under the banner ‘Classic Country’.
For this programme, a number of country songs have been arranged in such a way that, alongside the ongoing Heroes of Rock, a new repertoire has emerged that can be performed acoustically. From classics such as ‘Country Roads’ by John Denver and ‘Green, green Grass of home’ by Tom Jones to surprising versions of songs by artists such as Glen Campbell and Linda Ronstadt; the two men turn it into a wonderful (country) experience!
