Just a year after graduating from Codarts Music Theatre, Sem Konijn is already on Dutch stages with a full-length solo show: a rarity that makes it immediately clear that a new, distinctive voice is emerging here.
Sem is known for his roles in Cyrano, Scrooge and Je Anne, for which he was nominated for a Musical Award for Best Emerging Talent. Or for his song ‘Dit Moet Worden Gezegd’, which went viral in the Dutch media.
‘Populisme De Musical’ is a topical, bold and urgent show. With an explosive mix of political cabaret, razor-sharp satire, music, singing and self-mockery, he sketches the appeal of populism. Why is anger so seductive? Why does the punchy one-liner so often beat nuance? And where is the line between democracy and division?
With humour, musicality and disarming honesty, Sem draws up a musical-theatrical balance sheet of Dutch democracy and society. ‘Populisme De Musical’ is confronting and recognisable, but above all hopeful: a passionate call for gentleness in an age that seems to be growing ever harsher.
