A year after graduating from Codarts Music Theater, Sem Konijn is already on Dutch stages with a full-fledged solo program: a rarity that immediately makes it clear that a new, idiosyncratic voice is emerging here.
Sem is known for his roles in Cyrano, Scrooge and Je Anne, for which he was nominated for a Musical Award for Best Up-and-coming Talent. Or his song 'This Must Be Said', which went viral in the Dutch media.
'Populism The Musical' is a current, brutal and urgent performance. With an explosive mix of political cabaret, razor-sharp satire, music, song and self-mockery, he outlines the appeal of populism. Why is anger so tempting? Why does the hard one-liner so often win over nuance? And where is the line between democracy and division?
With humor, musicality and disarming honesty, Sem makes a musical-theatrical assessment of Dutch democracy and society. 'Populism De Musical' is confrontational and recognizable, but above all hopeful: a passionate call for softness in a time that seems to be increasingly hardening.
A performance that grates, makes you laugh, moves you and encourages conversation. You must see this.
